Developing a Methodology for Model Intercomparison and Its Application to Improve Simulated Streamflow by Land Surface Models

چکیده
Abstract Runoff generated by land surface models (LSMs) is extensively used to predict future river discharge under global warming. However, the structural bias of LSMs, precipitation climate model, and other factors could cause runoff be biased. A model intercomparison study can help understand LSM behavior. Traditional discover output variation evaluate performance, but explaining reason for difference challenging. This developed a novel method identify reasons disparities suggest improvements. Consequently, we investigated impacts settings adopting another in one until it mimic similar features its output. Hence, process called “emulation model.” We employed two LSMs [Simple Biosphere with Urban Canopy (SiBUC) Meteorological Research Institute Simple (MRI-SiB)] Thai River basin. SiBUC produced higher than MRI-SiB, development MRI-SiB emulation revealed this variation. The differences characteristics affected streamflow estimation. For instance, peak was faster observed dry year. Conversely, there tendency underestimate flow estimated during transition from wet seasons. Incorporating alleviate shortcomings each model. Overall, proposed strengths weaknesses enhance reproducibility hydrological Significance Statement aims develop new methodology Understanding why behave differently important enhancing reliability prediction. Our findings guide what affects runoff-based estimation, which will reduce uncertainty flood drought predictions.

like any other learning activity, translation is a problem solving activity which involves executing parallel cognitive processes. the ability to think about these higher processes, plan, organize, monitor and evaluate the most influential executive cognitive processes is what flavell (1975) called “metacognition” which encompasses raising awareness of mental processes as well as using effectiv...
Developing a Watershed Characteristics Database to Improve Low Streamflow Prediction
Information regarding topographic, meteorologic, geologic, and geomorphic characteristics is increasingly available in spatially explicit digital formats. Of interest is whether enhanced spatial processing of newly available digital grids can lead to new estimators of watershed characteristics which may in turn, improve our ability to predict extreme hydrologic events. Regional hydrologic model...
متن کاملLand - atmosphere COz exchange simulated by a land surface process model coupled to an atmospheric general circulation model
CO2 uptake during plant photosynthesis and CO2 loss during plant and microbial respiration were added to a land surface process model to simulate the diurnal and annual cycles of biosphere-atmosphere CO2 exchange. The model was coupled to a modified version of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate Model version 2, and the coupled model was run for 5 years. The geographi...

This paper presents the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) Land Surface Models Intercomparison Project (ALMIP) for Microwave Emission Models (ALMIP-MEM). ALMIP-MEM consists in an ensemble of simulations of C-band brightness temperatures over West Africa for a one-year annual cycle in 2006. Simulations have been performed for an incidence angle of 55◦ and results are evaluated aga...
